How to Calculate a Percentage

A percentage describes a part of something as a share of 100. "Per cent" literally means "per hundred," so 45% means 45 out of every 100. To turn any part-to-whole relationship into a percentage, divide the part by the whole and multiply by 100:

Percentage = (Part ÷ Whole) × 100

  • 18 out of 24 questions correct: 18 ÷ 24 × 100 = 75%
  • A $12 tip on a $60 bill: 12 ÷ 60 × 100 = 20%
  • 3 rainy days in a 30-day month: 3 ÷ 30 × 100 = 10%

How to calculate a percentage of a number

Convert the percentage to a decimal by dividing it by 100, then multiply by the number. For 15% of 80: 15 ÷ 100 = 0.15, and 0.15 × 80 = 12.

How to calculate percentage increase

Subtract the original value from the new value, divide the difference by the original value, and multiply by 100. A rent that rises from $1,200 to $1,320 went up by 120, and 120 ÷ 1,200 × 100 = 10% increase.

How to calculate percentage decrease

Subtract the new value from the original value, divide by the original value, and multiply by 100. A price that drops from $50 to $40 fell by 10, and 10 ÷ 50 × 100 = 20% decrease. Note that increases and decreases are not symmetrical: going from 40 back to 50 is a 25% increase, because the starting point is smaller.
